Ultimately from German Spatz (“sparrow”), from Old High German sparo (“sparrow”), from Proto-Germanic *sparwô (“sparrow”), + -ek. Cognate with Russian шпак (špak, “starling”), Ukrainian шпак (špak), Belarusian шпак (špak), Polish szpak (“starling”).
