Etymology

[edit]

Although the etymology is uncertain, the prenasalized form points to Pre-Greek origin. Therefore, not related to φοῖβος (phoîbos, pure, bright, brilliant), as per Ehrlich, who derives it from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰigʷ-ro-, based on comparison with Slovene žigra (tinder).
