Ancient Greek

Etymology

[edit]

Unexplained. Some connect the glosses ἀφικτόν (aphiktón, repugnant, detestable) and ἀφικτρός (aphiktrós, stained, defiled). Φοῖβος (Phoîbos) has nothing to do with Φόβος (Phóbos). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoygʷ-o-, from *bʰeygʷ- (to shine, clear).
