Commonly derived from Proto-Indo-European *sloHgʷ-eh₂- (to mishandle, press), with Balto-Slavic cognates including Latvian slēgt (to shut), Lithuanian sluogas, slogus. Also compare λάζομαι (lázomai, I grasp, seize).
