Etymology

Commonly derived from Proto-Indo-European *sloHgʷ-eh₂- (“to mishandle, press”), with Balto-Slavic cognates including Latvian slēgt (“to shut”), Lithuanian sluogas, slogus. Also compare λάζομαι (lázomai, “I grasp, seize”).
