Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek ὅμηρος (hómēros, hostage); possibly ultimately from a combination of Proto-Indo-European *dʰǵʰm̥mō (earthling) + PIE suffix meaning "to join," in the sense of a master carpenter or wheel-maker.
