Etymology[edit]
From Ancient Greek ὅμηρος (hómēros, “hostage”); possibly ultimately from a combination of Proto-Indo-European *dʰǵʰm̥mō (“earthling”) + PIE suffix meaning "to join," in the sense of a master carpenter or wheel-maker.
