Inherited from Proto-Northeast Caucasian. Cognate with Andi мичӏчӏи (miččʼi), Tsez меча (meča), Lak мечӏ (mečʼ), Archi мач (mač), Udi мечӏ (meč̣), Khinalug мычӏ (mɨč̣) among others.
