Etymology[edit]

The first part is probably խոլ (xol, swelling, tonsil, gland), the second contains որձիք (orjikʻ, testicles), because of the form of orchid's root. Compare Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis) with the same semantic development.[1]
