Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃orǵʰ-i- +‎ ‎(-kʿ). Cognates include Ancient Greek ὄρχις ‎(órkhis), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌 ‎(ǝrǝzi, testicles), Hittite [script needed] ‎(arki-, testicle), Albanian herdhe, and Middle Irish uirgge ‎(testicle). See also որձ ‎(orj), յորձ ‎(yorj). Proto-Georgian-Zan *werʒ₁- may be an Armenian borrowing.
