Etymology[edit]

Literally, "side-guardian" or "side-sover", wholly borrowed from an unattested Iranian compound equivalent to կուշտ (kušt) +‎ -ապանակ (-apanak). Old Georgian კუშტაბანი (ḳušṭabani, buttonhole) is from the same source.
