[edit]Inherited from Middle High German stunt, stunde, from Old High German stunta, from Proto-West Germanic *stundu, from Proto-Germanic *stundō (“point in time, hour”). Appears twice in Levita's dictionary of 1542. Compare Alemannic German Schtund, German Stunde (“hour”), (archaic or poetic) Stund, Icelandic stund (“hour; a while”), Danish stund (“a while”). Doublet of שטונדע (shtunde, “hour; private lesson”)
