Etymology

Cognate to Hebrew עָשָׁן (ʿāšān, “smoke”), Classical Syriac ܬܢܢܐ (tennānā, “smoke, steam, fume”), maybe originally related to نَتَنَ (natana, “to stink”) and وَتِين (watīn, “aorta”), and via contamination from ع ط ر (ʕ-ṭ-r) to Ge'ez ዕጣን (ʿəṭan, “incense”).
