[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian کنیز (kanīz), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (knyck' /kanīzag/), diminutive of [Book Pahlavi needed] (knyk' /kanīg/, “maid”) from Proto-Iranian *kanyáH (“small girl; maiden”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kanyáH, from Proto-Indo-European *ken-. Doublet of कन्या (kanyā). Compare Punjabi ਕਨੀਜ਼ (kanīz) / کَنیز (kanez).
