Inherited from Prakrit *𑀲𑀧𑁆𑀧(𑀯𑁆)𑀑𑀅𑀮𑀕 (*sappa(v)oalaga), from Sanskrit सर्प (sarpá, snake) +‎ पोत (pota, young one of an animal) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮- (-la-) + -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with Punjabi ਸਪੋਲਾ (sapolā).
