Inherited from Middle Bengali পড়িশী (poṛiśi), from Old Bengali পডিযেশী (paḍiyeśī), from Prakrit 𑀧𑀟𑀺𑀯𑁂𑀲𑀺𑀅 (paḍivesia), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀧𑀝𑀺𑀯𑁂𑀲𑀺𑀬 (paṭivesiya), from Sanskrit प्रतिवेश्य (prativeśya). Cognate with Odia ପଡ଼ୋସୀ (paṛosi), Bhojpuri परोसी (parōsī), Hindi पड़ोसी (paṛosī), Marathi पडोशी (paḍośī).
