Borrowed from Arabic ثاقِب (ṯāqib, literally piercer), originally the active participle of ثَقَبَ (ṯaqaba, to pierce), with the meaning commonly held as "(piercingly) bright" after the Quranic phrase of اَلنَّجْمُ ٱلثَّاقِبُ (an-najmu ṯ-ṯāqibu, [It is] the star which is piercing[ly] [bright]).
