Inherited from Sanskrit कर्कट (karkaṭa). Cognate to Hindi ककड़ी (kakṛī), Marathi काकडी (kākḍī). Doublet of કાકડો (kākḍo, “unripe coconut”) and કર્કટ (karkaṭ, “crab”).
