This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “What exactly does the Burmese word for "Sunday" mean? It seems that နွေ (nwe) is the main distinguishing element here, and it by itself means "summer" or "dry hot season". Is that the correct interpretation? What do the first three syllables mean? According to Luce, the first two syllables, *တန်နှင် (*tanhnang), mean "governor", adducing Old Chinese 政 (OC *tjeŋs, “government”) as a cognate,[1] so Sunday would mean something like "governor of the summer sun". What does the third syllable, *ဂ​ (*ga.​), mean in this case still though?”
