Burmese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Said to be from Hindi गुद (gud) according to the Myanmar Language Commission, but very unlikely. Other scholars and colloquial traditions said it was derived from Hindi वृद्ध (vŕddh, “the elder”), which was once used to refer to the often elderly station master; this seems phonologically a bit more likely.
Pronunciation
[edit]- Phonetic respelling: ဘူဒါ
- IPA(key): /bùdà/
- Romanization: MLCTS: bhuta • ALA-LC: bhūtā • BGN/PCGN: buda • Okell: buta
Noun
[edit]ဘူတာ • (bhuta)
Derived terms
[edit]- ဘူတာရုံ (bhutarum, “railway station”)
