*ᚱᚨᚢᚾᛁᛃᚨᚾ (*raunijan, “to test, to try”) +‎ -ᛃᚨᛉ (-jaʀ, agent noun suffix). The verb is ancestral to Old Norse reyna (“to try, to prove”), and the suffix -ᛃᚨᛉ (-jaʀ) is a variant of -ᚨᛉ (-aʀ), corresponding to Old Norse -ir.
