[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown, apparently from Pre-Greek. Already in Ancient Greek, this non-Indoeuropean origin produced a folk etymology and the corresponding alternative spelling ἁλκυών (halkuṓn) based on the imagined derivation from ἅλς (háls, “salt”) + κυέω (kuéō, “I conceive”).
