Ancient Greek
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- ῥυσσός (rhussós)
Etymology
[edit]The word can be compared with λοξός (loxós), κομψός (kompsós) and γαυσός (gausós). Solmsen's comparison with ἐρύω (erúō, “to draw, to pull”) is formally possible, but this doesn't furnish an Indo-European etymology. The similarity with Latin rūga (“wrinkle”) and Lithuanian raūkas (“wrinkle”) is accidental.
