Etymology[edit]

First attested as Middle Korean 그란 (kulan), 거란 (kelan). A pre-Sino-Korean loan from Chinese 契丹 (kʰɨt̚ tɑn), with typical Middle Korean lenition of intervocalic /t/ to /ɾ/.
