Korean

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Abbreviation of 재일교포(在日僑胞) (jaeilgyopo) or 재일동포(在日同胞) (jaeildongpo), both words used to describe Zainichi Koreans. Likely coined during the widespread repatriation of Zainichi Koreans to North Korea, with roughly 90,000 Koreans emigrating from the late 1950s to as late as the early 1980s. Due to their easier access to foreign goods and news through relatives in Japan, they are a well known community in North Korea.
