Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Usually treated as a hypocoristic formation with the suffix +‎ *-ōē from a name with *wiHrás (man), such as Avestan 𐬬𐬍𐬭𐬁𐬯𐬞𐬀 (vīrāspa, He who has men and horses). In the ŠKZ inscription corresponds to Parthian 𐭅𐭓𐭅𐭃 (wrwd, Orodes), so perhaps etymologically should not be separated from it.

Proper noun

[edit]

𐭥𐭩𐭥𐭥𐭣 (wyrwd /Wīrōy/ or ʿyʿʿd /Wērōy/) (Inscriptional)

  1. a male given name, Wiroy, Weroy, or Viroy
