Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek Αἰθιοπία (Aithiopía), from Αἰθίοψ (Aithíops, an Ethiopian), traditionally said to mean "one with a charred complexion", from αἴθω (aíthō, I burn) + ὤψ (ṓps, eye, face, complexion), but this is formally difficult and seems like a folk etymology.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ɛˈtjoːpi̯ən/, [ɛ-], [e-], [-pi.ən], [-pjən]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: Äthi‧o‧pi‧en
