Etymology[edit]

Coined by a user of an online Romanian-learning community on Discord in March of 2022.

The word is derived from the native name of the Romanian letter î (î din i), combined with the suffix -ism.

Îdinism (plural Îdinisms)

  1. (linguistics, orthography) In the context of the orthography of the Romanian language, the name of a movement to promote the removal of the letter ⟨â⟩ from the Romanian alphabet either:
    1. Completely, without exception; or
    2. Sparing the word 'român' and its derivatives; e.g. 'România', 'românesc', or 'românism'.
