Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old French eschec mat, from Arabic شَاه مَاتَ (šāh māta), from Persian شاه مات (šâh mât, “the king [is] conquered”). Perhaps conflated with Arabic مَاتَ (māta, “to die”).
