Etymology[edit]

Probably from Arabic خَمَّنَ (ḵammana); compare Moroccan Arabic خمم (ḵammam, to think), Tunisian Arabic خمّم (ḵammem, to think).

Alternatively a derivation from حَمّ (ḥamm, to heat), as in “get heated up” (compare tmasħan), or from هَمّ (hamm, to worry).
