Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from a Finnic language, from Proto-Finnic *laiva, in turn borrowed from Proto-Germanic *flawją. Compare Lithuanian laĩvė (boat), laĩvas (ship), Latvian laĩva (boat).[1][2]
