Ellipsis of Góry Świętokrzyskie (literally mountains of the Holy Cross), from góry and świętokrzyskie, a compound of święty (holy) +‎ -o- +‎ krzyż (cross) +‎ -ski (adjectival suffix) +‎ -e (nonvirile plural suffix reinterpreted as neuter singular).
