Romanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Possibly borrowed from Old Church Slavonic цапъ (capŭ), from Proto-Slavic *capъ, from Gothic [Term?], from Latin caper, making it a doublet of capră. Also akin to or derived from Albanian cjap. Compare Aromanian tsap.

Alternately, it may have been borrowed directly from Gothic [Term?], from which the dialectal Italian zappo was also derived.
