Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Bulgarian шатра (šatra) or Serbo-Croatian šatra or Hungarian sátor, from Old Church Slavonic шатьръ (šatĭrŭ), of Bulgar origin. Cognate with Turkish çadır (umbrella), Persian چادر (čâdar, tent, umbrella), ultimately from Sanskrit छत्त्र (chattra, shelter).
