From Proto-Indo-European *ḱŕ̥h₂-es-n-h₂, from *ḱerh₂- (head, top). Cognate with Ancient Greek κάρα (kára, head, face), Proto-Germanic *hirzniją (brain) and Old Armenian սար (sar, tip, top; mountain).
