Calque of Ancient Greek εὐάγγελος (euángelos) or of borrowed Ва́нгел (Vángel), an abbreviated form of Ева́нгел (Evángel) (from Ancient Greek above).

By surface analysis, благо- (blago-, good) +‎ вест (vest, message, news), meaning "(bringer of) good news".
