Borrowed from Latin Moscovia, which is in turn from Old East Slavic Московь (Moskovĭ) or Москъвь (Moskŭvĭ), 1st mentioned in the 12th century, a form of Москꙑ (Mosky). Doublet of Москва́ (Moskvá).
