Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mordvinic *azərə, from Proto-Finno-Permic *asȣrɜ (“lord, ruler”), ultimately borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hásuras. Compare Sanskrit असुर (asura) and Avestan 𐬀𐬵𐬎𐬭𐬀 (ahura). Cognates include Udmurt узыр (uzyr) and Komi-Zyrian озыр (ozyr).
