Inherited from Old East Slavic ръжь (rŭžĭ), from Proto-Slavic *rъžь, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wrugʰyo-. Compare Serbo-Croatian and Serbo-Croatian raž, Bulgarian ръж (rǎž), Latvian rudzi, German Roggen, English rye.
