Etymology[edit]

By surface analysis, стих (stih, poem) +‎ -о- (-o-, an excrescence for euphony) +‎ плетец (pletec, tier), literally poem-tier, i.e. someone who ties knots in his poems; this surface analysis is also likely the true derivation of the term. Compare Russian стихоплёт (stixopljót).
