[edit]Perhaps adapted from Persian حالا (hâlâ, “now”), from Arabic حَالًا (ḥālan, “now”).
Cognate with Kazakh әлі (älı, “still, yet”), Kyrgyz али (ali, “still, as yet; just now”), Kumyk гьали (hali, “now; still, yet”), Uzbek hali (“still, yet”), Uyghur ھېلى (hëli, “still, yet, recently”).

- after present indicative verb forms or the particle бит: connotes surprise, doubt or hesitation
