From *աշտ (*ašt), from Middle Persian *ašt, from Old Persian *𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡 (aršti-, spear) (attested in 𐎢𐎺𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡𐎣 (uvārštika-, good spearman)). Related to Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬙𐬌 (aršti, spear, lance), Sanskrit ऋष्टि (ṛṣṭi, spear, lance) and more distantly to Persian خشت (xešt, javelin, dart, spear), Kurdish [script?] (heš). Also from Iranian: Avar гӏащтӏи (ʿaš̄ṭi).
