Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Median *arītaxōδ from an old Iranian compound *rīta-xauda- (face cover). For the first part compare Sogdian [script needed] (ryṯ, face). The second part is from Iranian *xaud- (to cover), whence Old Persian [script needed] (xauda-, hat) and Old Armenian խոյր (xoyr).
