Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Attested in the Aṙtial (Transylvania) dialect area which was spoken by the Armenian diaspora in Romania, Hungary and Poland, some of whom immigrated from Crimea. See also լոսդի (losdi), թառափ (tʻaṙapʻ) with a similar philological context.

A Turkic borrowing: compare Armeno-Kipchak դուղու-պալըխ (tuγu-balïχ), դուխու-պալըխ (tuχu-balïχ, sturgeon), Siberian Tatar тоғы (toɣɨ, sturgeon), Turkmen doky (beluga), Shor тог (tog, perch), Northern Altai туглы (tuglï, Brachymystax). Hungarian tok (sturgeon) is borrowed from the same source. For the ultimate origin see EDAL and Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Ungarischen, without the Armenian, the latter citing also a Siberian Tatar tuɣu.[1][2]
