Etymology[edit]

The root is կալ- (kal-), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷw-əl-, from *gʷeu- (to bend). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἐγ-γυαλίζω (eg-gualízō, put into the palm of the hand) and Latin vola (palm).
