Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

The basic meaning is “announcer”, from Middle Iranian *nivēδāk, an agent noun from *ni-waid-, from *ni- (down) + *waid- (to know); see the latter for more. For the suffix see -ակ (-ak).

    1. an official attending the king or a lord, who clears his away and announces his arrival
    2. usher at a royal court
    3. envoy, delegate, messenger
