Yiddish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Dutch beurs, from French bourse, from Late Latin bursa, ultimately from Ancient Greek βύρσα (búrsa). Cognate to and possibly borrowed from German Börse. Compare Macedonian берза (berza), Serbo-Croatian bȅrza. Doublet of בירזשע (birzhe).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

בערזע (berzef, plural בערזעס (berzes)

  1. stock market
  2. stock exchange

Usage notes[edit]

  • Note that unlike in English, Yiddish does not differentiate between the market and the physical place where the stock trading takes place.
