Related to Akkadian 𒆠𒂗𒄀 (Šumerum, “Sumer”), Egyptian sꜣngꜣr (“Babylonia”), Hittite 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/šanhar(a)/), all likely ultimately from Sumerian 𒌦𒊕𒈪𒂵 (ug̃₃ sag̃-gig₂-ga /ug̃ Sag̃-Giga/, “Sumerians”, literally “black-headed people”) or 𒆠𒂗𒄀 (ki-en-gi /Kengir/, “Sumer”, literally “place of the noble lords”).
