Etymology[edit]

Unknown, too rare a word, perhaps from the root م س خ (m-s-ḵ), maybe an Aramaic borrowing related to Classical Syriac ܐܡܫܐ (ʾamšā, flow, spurt), ܐܡܝܫܐ (ʾāmīšā, swamp; wetland edge of a river) in reference to where it grows.
