From Middle Persian hlbwlc (Harborz, the mountain range surrounding the world), from Old Persian *Harā Brzatī (high mountain), northwestern borrowing from Proto-Iranian *Harā Bṛzatī (Compare Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬭𐬁⸱𐬠𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬍 (harā.bərəzai, a legendary mountain in Iranian mythology)). Akin to English Elbrus.
