Etymology[edit]

From Persian آذربایجان (Âzarbâyjân), from Arabic أذربيجان (ʾaḏarbayjān), Arabicized form of late Middle Persian [script needed] (Ādurbādagān), from early Middle Persian [script needed] (Āturpātakān, Atropatene), from the name of Atropates, the Persian nobleman who founded the independent kingdom of Atropatene. Compare Old Armenian Ատրպատական (Atrpatakan) and Armenian Ադրբեջան (Adrbeǰan): the first preserves the Middle Iranian form, the second is from an Arabicized form. For the suffix compare Old Armenian -ական (-akan), from Iranian.
