Etymology[edit]

Might come from Old Iranian *ham-pauγa- or *ham-pūγa- and be the Iranian correspondence of Sanskrit पूग (pūga, multitude), Ardhamagadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑀽𑀳 (pūha, crowd) (compare Ancient Greek πῡγή (pūgḗ, buttocks)).[1] Related to Old Armenian ամբոխ (ambox), an Iranian borrowing.
